Microexamination
Summary In order to detect diagnostic clues in contact dermatitis, careful examination of the patient is required. 'Microexamination' is a meticulous and systematic contact dermatitis examination. Examination can be divided into local, distal anatomical sites, and temporal. The local/distal elements to examination are illustrated in this chapter. To illustrate this concept of microexamination further, two essential anatomical areas for examination, the hands and the head and neck, are reviewed. Even when not part of the local examination, these two regions are mandatory areas for distal site examination. Hand dermatitis is generally accepted to consist of a heterogeneous group of dermatitis of differing etiologies including endogenous, irritant, and allergic, with often multiple causative factors. Allergic contact dermatitis of the head and neck can occur from all six potential routes of exposure to contact allergens (direct contact, air-borne, hand to face, by proxy, systemic, and mucosal).
